The 101 of putting together a stylish wardrobe

Having a great sense of style is not confined to celebrities or Instagram influencers. With just a few tips, you can transform your wardrobe and confidently put your best face forward.

Not many people realise it but how they dress has almost a direct impact on their career and personal success. According to a 2018 study by Robert Half, 80 percent of managers surveyed said clothing choices affect a person’s chances of being promoted. In fact, 44 percent of senior managers said they’ve had to talk to an employee about their inappropriate attire while a third admitted to sending staff home based on what they were wearing.

Of course, you don’t have to dress to the nines every day nor do you need to have a wardrobe that rivals that of your favourite celebrity. Just a few small tweaks can set you on the path to wardrobe (and career) success.

First, know thyself.

As a Style CoachTM, I always remind my clients that everyone is unique and with a unique body type. It’s important to have a healthy appreciation of your own individuality and develop a sense of style that works with your body shape and personality.

The good news is, style can be learnt. It is not about following trends but about discovering your own personal style. This can be achieved by understanding your silhouette and how different clothes fit your body. However, true style goes beyond clothing – it’s also about confidence and body language. True style comes when you’re totally comfortable with yourself, inside and out.

Next, do an audit of your existing wardrobe.

As Singapore emerges from two months of circuit breaker and enters Phase Two of reopening, it’s time to shed your home wear and get ready to greet the world again. However, you don’t have to rush to the shops and buy a brand new wardrobe. Start by taking a look at what you already have.

Using a chart like the one below, you can easily visualise how much time you spend at work, on social gatherings and working out. What type of dress code does your workplace require and do you have enough of that type of clothing?

No matter the particularities of your lifestyle, there are some must-haves in every woman’s wardrobe. This includes the perfect pair of jeans, a well-made pair of black pants, a tailored white shirt, a fitting white tee, a classic black dress, a skirt, a sweater, a blazer and stylish leisurewear. For men, it’s important to have a well-made pair of trousers and shorts, jeans, chinos, a good tailored suit, a tailored white shirt, fitting white tee, a sweater, a well-made casual jacket as well as stylish casual wear.

Don’t forget… stay true to yourself.

When you’re ready to start shopping, remember to avoid buying clothes just because they are in trend. If the trend does not suit you, move on. Fashion is fickle whereas style is timeless – it is about finding the clothes that fit and enhance your body shape. The clothes should be comfortable and flexible enough that you can create different looks with each item.  And remember, stylish clothing does not have to be expensive. Style can be found at every budget; it doesn’t have to involve chasing designer labels. It’s more important to pick out clothes, shoes and accessories that are well-made and fits well.

And finally, just have fun!

Very often, people tend to be conservative with colours in their wardrobe, which limits their outfit combinations. Have you ever considered matching pink with green? Or yellow with purple? Get adventurous! You just might surprise yourself with an interesting new look that adds an extra spring in your step.
